WordPress plugin vulnerabilities: what your business should do

A WordPress security advisory becomes useful when someone checks whether the affected component is installed, whether the vulnerable version is present and what action is available. A dramatic annual total cannot answer those questions for your individual website.

Plugins and themes deserve attention alongside WordPress itself. They add functionality, dependencies and maintenance responsibilities. Keep a current inventory and make sure someone receives and evaluates relevant advisories.

What historical vulnerability figures show

Patchstack's 2025 report counted 7,966 newly identified WordPress ecosystem vulnerabilities in 2024, with 96% in plugins and 4% in themes, using rounded shares. The practical implication is to manage the components you use. It does not justify assigning every site the same probability of compromise or translating a global disclosure count into a local business loss estimate.

Read an advisory against your installation

Record the plugin or theme name, installed version, affected versions, fixed version and any conditions required for exploitation. A vulnerability may require an authenticated role, a particular feature or another condition. Severity matters, but exposure and available mitigation matter too.

Confirm the component identity carefully. Similar names and rebranded plugins can lead to mistakes. Use the vendor's advisory and a reliable vulnerability reference, and preserve the link in your maintenance record.

An external scan may infer a version from public files or page markup. Verify it through authorised administration before treating the result as definitive. Hidden version information does not itself make a component safe.

Understand the main consequences

A website compromise can lead to altered content, unwanted redirects, spam or exposure of information. The specific outcome depends on the weakness and the attack. Do not assume a visual check of the homepage rules those problems out.

Use updates with verification

If a relevant flaw has no available fix, evaluate temporary removal, disabling the affected feature or replacing the component. A firewall rule may help reduce exposure in some cases, but it is not proof that every route is blocked and does not remove the maintenance obligation.

Remove unused plugins and themes once dependencies have been checked. Deactivation leaves code on the server, which is why unused components should not accumulate indefinitely.

Keep other protective layers in place

Strong authentication, limited administrative roles and supported server software reduce other routes to compromise. HTTPS protects the connection but does not fix a vulnerable plugin. See TLS and WordPress security for the distinction.

Maintain backups and test restoration. If an incident occurs, preserve useful evidence, assess the cause and restore from a verified clean state where appropriate. Fix the original exposure before returning the same application to normal operation.

Ask what your hosting contract actually covers

A host may provide infrastructure without maintaining every application component. Ask who checks advisories, who tests updates, how urgent issues are handled and what malware cleanup or restoration includes.
