Why WordPress updates need a reliable routine

Updates fix bugs, maintain compatibility and address security weaknesses. Leaving them indefinitely because the site still looks normal allows technical debt and avoidable exposure to accumulate.

Person at a workstation

An update can also break a function. The answer is to manage that risk with backups and testing, not to assume either that every update is harmless or that avoiding updates is safer.

More than the WordPress core

Track WordPress itself, plugins, themes and relevant server software such as PHP. A current WordPress version does not establish that every installed extension is maintained.

Remove components the site no longer needs after checking dependencies. A deactivated plugin still leaves its files on the server. Keep a supported theme arrangement and document any custom code that needs special handling.

For a reported security issue, check the installed version and actual conditions using our plugin vulnerability guide.

Use a repeatable update sequence

  1. Prepare a usable backup. Include the files and database needed to recover the site.
  2. Review the change. Read relevant release notes and identify important compatibility concerns.
  3. Test appropriately. Use a staging copy for changes where the site's risk and functionality justify it.
  4. Check the important journeys. Verify the homepage, forms, login and any shop or booking function.
  5. Apply the approved change. Follow the site's release process and check production afterwards.
  6. Record the outcome. Note versions, verification and anything that needs follow-up.

The official WordPress update documentation describes update procedures. Follow the instructions relevant to the installation rather than deleting files or retrying changes blindly when an update fails.

Do not confuse a calendar with a security response

A routine schedule helps prevent forgotten maintenance. A serious advisory may need action before the next scheduled window. Decide who evaluates urgency and who can authorise the work.

Automatic updates can be useful, but they still need success checks and recovery arrangements. A notification that an update started is not the same as evidence that the site works afterwards.

ResaHost maintenance has scheduled updates monthly in Basic and weekly in Pro and Premium. Check the plan scope and agree how unusual or urgent work is handled.

Make recovery practical

Know where the backup is, who can restore it and what recent data could be lost. A database rollback can affect new orders or enquiries, so restoring should be a deliberate decision.

Use backup and restoration arrangements that match the website's role. Test restoration periodically in a safe environment so you are not learning the process during an incident.

Name the owner

Record who performs updates, who checks the result and who receives an error notification. Ensure another contact can act when the usual person is unavailable.

A brief maintenance record answers more than “updates are enabled”. It shows what changed, when it was verified and what remains open. That is the basis of a website someone is actually maintaining.
