What is a virtual private server?
A virtual private server, or VPS, is a virtual machine running on a provider's physical infrastructure. It gives you a separate operating-system environment with an allocation of resources such as memory, storage and computing capacity.
A VPS offers more control than a conventional shared hosting account. That control also creates operational work. Unless management is included, your business or its maintainer must keep the operating system and application running securely.
How a VPS differs from shared hosting
With shared hosting, the provider manages the common web-serving environment and gives you an account within it. You normally work through a control panel and the supported application features.
With a VPS, you can generally install and configure your own software within the product's limits. Several VPS instances may still share physical hardware. Virtual isolation does not necessarily mean dedicated physical CPU cores, a separate machine or unlimited resources.

When a business may need one
A custom application may require a runtime, database version, background process or system setting that ordinary hosting does not support. A separate environment can also help when workloads need distinct release cycles or access controls.
Demanding dynamic websites can benefit from a suitably sized VPS, but visitor count alone is not a sizing rule. A well-cached information site and a busy online shop behave differently even with the same monthly traffic.

A large number on a specification sheet is not a performance guarantee. Measure the application and understand the workload's peak periods. Database access, cache configuration and third-party calls can matter as much as raw capacity.
The work after installation
Your maintainer needs to control administrator access, expose only necessary services, configure the application and establish updates. They must monitor storage, errors and availability, then act on alerts.
Certificates and backups need continuing attention. A successful snapshot job is not proof that the application can be recovered. Keep the necessary files, database and configuration recoverable, and test the important business functions after a restore.
Security is a continuing process rather than a short command list. Default firewall rules copied from a blog may not fit your application, access model or network arrangement.
Managed and unmanaged options

Budget for more than rental
Include installation, software licences, backups, monitoring, maintenance and incident cover. Use a realistic estimate of your own team's time, even if the server itself costs little. Also plan the eventual migration or closure of the service.
A VPS is a useful tool when its flexibility solves a real requirement and a capable maintainer is responsible. If neither condition applies, a supported application or managed website environment may be the simpler purchase.
