Help ChatGPT Search discover your website

When someone asks ChatGPT about your business, the answer may or may not use web search. Start by distinguishing a search-enabled response from a response generated without visiting current sources. The controls available to a website owner mainly concern the public pages and how they can be retrieved.

Your goal is straightforward: make relevant, accurate information easy to access and easy for a customer to verify. There is no switch that guarantees a recommendation, and publishing a page does not set a deadline for it to appear in answers.

Use the search crawler control

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, GPTBot for potential model-training use, and ChatGPT-User for certain user-initiated visits. Search and training settings are independent. A business can allow search discovery while choosing not to allow the training crawler. OpenAI crawler documentation.

Ask your technical owner to review the existing policy rather than replacing robots.txt with an unrestricted template. The file may contain intentional rules for other parts of the site. Bot protection at the CDN or firewall also needs checking; an allowed crawler can still encounter a challenge or an error.

Our robots.txt guide covers the practical distinction between access policy and security. Private content requires proper authentication, whatever a crawler's name happens to be.

Make the destination page useful

A page about a managed hosting service should explain scope, update responsibilities, backups, support hours and contract terms. A guide about moving a website should explain the steps and limits of a transfer. Writing the exact words of a hoped-for prompt into every heading is unnecessary.

Use a clear title and a descriptive URL. Answer the central question near the start, then provide the detail a buyer needs. Keep the page readable on a phone and ensure important information exists as text rather than only in graphics.

For European buyers, state the currency, tax treatment and actual service coverage. Distinguish server location from company location. Avoid pages that merely replace one city name with another while implying a local operation that does not exist.

Reduce contradictory business facts

Check that your company name, service descriptions, contact details and current prices agree across the site. Link outdated offers to their current replacement where useful. If a page remains for historical reasons, make its date and purpose clear.

Use Organisation schema to describe real visible facts. Do not include unsupported languages, fabricated social profiles or a false address. Structured data cannot compensate for contradictory information in the page itself.

Maintain authentic external profiles too. A search-enabled answer may cite a third party rather than your own site, so the source of an error can be an old directory entry or article.

Check discovery without inventing a ranking formula

Keep an accurate sitemap and use relevant webmaster tools for conventional search. These are worthwhile discovery practices, but being indexed in one search engine is not a universal, guaranteed gateway into every ChatGPT response.

Do not buy promises based on a required word count, a fixed number of links or an llms.txt file. Our llms.txt explanation describes its optional role. The useful test is whether a page provides reliable information and whether your observed results improve, not whether it meets an invented AI score.

Run a small, repeatable test

Choose a mix of branded and unbranded questions. For a hosting business, these might concern maintenance responsibilities, moving an existing site or finding a supplier with servers in a suitable region. Ask neutrally in a fresh conversation and record whether search was used.

Save the answer, date, citations and exact prompt. Check whether a citation supports the claim. Repeat later using the same method, and keep different countries or languages separate in your report.

The measurement guide explains how to avoid mistaking a handful of answers for a stable market position. If the answer contains a material error, use the correction process.

Put responsibility behind the website

Search visibility work is easier when someone owns availability, redirects, access rules and releases. ResaHost WordPress maintenance defines the technical maintenance service. Agree content and specialist search work separately where needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay to force an organic recommendation?

A supplier cannot guarantee what an independently generated answer will say. Review proposals by their deliverables, evidence and reporting method.

Does blocking GPTBot remove my website from ChatGPT Search?

Training and search controls are separate; review OAI-SearchBot for the search policy.
